Aging-in-Place Bathroom Design

The homeowners wanted to prepare their home for the future without adding accessibility features they do not currently need. We incorporated adaptable details throughout both bathrooms so additional modifications can be made more easily later.

Accessible Shower Options

Both bathrooms were designed with improved accessibility in mind while offering different levels of entry based on the homeowners’ current and future needs.

 

One bathroom features a fully roll-in/walk-in shower with a minimal transition for maximum accessibility, while the second includes a low-curb shower that reduces the step-over height while maintaining a more traditional shower design.

 

Both showers incorporate thoughtful aging-in-place features, including grab bars, slip-resistant tile, and additional wall backing to allow for future grab bars or accessibility modifications as needs change.

Adaptable Bathroom Cabinetry

One of the most thoughtful features of the renovation is cabinetry designed to accommodate potential future wheelchair or mobility needs.

The cabinet toe-kick area was constructed so it can be removed more easily in the future if additional clearance is needed. Tile flooring was installed continuously beneath the cabinetry and extended to the wall, allowing future cabinet modifications without leaving unfinished flooring behind.

 

This gives the homeowners the ability to adapt the bathroom later without unnecessarily modifying the cabinetry today.

Accessibility Built Into the Walls

Additional structural backing was installed inside select bathroom walls before they were closed.

 

This allows additional grab bars or accessibility accessories to be installed in the future without requiring extensive wall demolition or searching for framing locations.

 

It is a relatively simple detail during construction that can make future aging-in-place modifications significantly easier.

Slip-Resistant Bathroom Flooring

Flooring selections were made with safety and everyday usability in mind. Slip-resistant tile provides improved traction in areas where wet surfaces can become a concern while maintaining the warm, finished appearance of the bathrooms.
