Pau hana and come home to a calming space for entertaining and relaxing no matter where you are on the island of Oahu. Sound good? Yes! But wait, your space is a bit outdated, weathered and in need of a remodel! You know you want to update your outdoor space, but maybe you don’t know if you should use composite decking or traditional wood. Well, Hilweh Builders is here to help you compare and contrast using trex vs. traditional (sealed) lumber for your next Hawaii construction project.

Before diving into material options, consult your homeowner's association guidelines. Some associations may have restrictions or requirements that dictate your choice of materials.
Trex: Trex is a leading brand in composite materials, crafted from a blend of recycled wood fibers and plastic. This material is engineered to mimic the natural appearance of wood while offering enhanced durability, low maintenance requirements, and resistance to rot, mold, and insects.
Trex comes in a variety of lines: Select, Enhance, Transcend, and Lineage. All lines are capped, meaning that they have a protective shell over the core for enhanced durability to fading, scratching, staining, and mold.
It is important to note that Trex is a brand and that there are other brands of composite decking available such as TimberTech and NewTechWood.
Wood: Traditional wood materials offer a classic aesthetic appeal and can be used for various remodeling projects, including decking, stairs, railings, and more. Wood boasts a natural beauty and warmth that many homeowners find appealing. However, it requires regular maintenance, including staining, sealing, and occasional repairs to combat weathering and deterioration.
Sealed wood vs. unsealed wood: This article will assume all wood is sealed. This means that the durability, maintenance, and cost will be different when comparing Trex to unsealed wood. In general, sealed wood is more durable than unsealed wood as it protects the wood from moisture stains, and scratches. It will require regular maintenance and sealing. In Hawaii, we generally recommend wood is sealed to protect it from the elements such as moisture, UV rays, and everyday wear and tear. This can be done in variety of ways depending on the type of wood and purpose of the space.

Trex materials are engineered to withstand Hawaii's tropical climate. Their moisture-resistant properties make them less prone to rot, mold, and decay, making them an ideal choice for ocean front, coastal, and humid environments. Additionally, Trex materials' fade-resistant technology helps them maintain their color and vibrancy, even under the intense sun. Furthermore, Trex is great for high-traffic areas such as front decks as it is designed to withstand heavy foot traffic without scratching, denting, or warping.
While wood offers a natural aesthetic that complements Hawaii's lush landscapes, it requires diligent maintenance to withstand the climate's challenges. Regular maintenance such as painting or sealing are necessary to protect wood from moisture, UV rays, and insect damage. Without proper maintenance, wood materials in Hawaii may be susceptible to rot, warping, and premature deterioration.
Wondering about the long-term cost and lifespan of Trex versus wood decking? Let's discuss your budget and preferences to find the best option for your project. Reach out to us for a free consultation today.
Trex is generally unaffected by salty air, while wood needs special treatment to resist corrosion. Note that regular cleaning are still advised to avoid a haze that may form without proper maintenance.
In general, Trex is not specifically designed for underwater applications. It's primarily intended for above-ground decking exposed to coastal elements, not continuous submersion.
Location within the coastal environment matters. If your deck is directly splashed by waves or experiences frequent tidal flooding, Trex might not be the ideal choice.
Alternative materials might be better suited. Certain wood species like Ipe or composite decking specifically designed for marine environments might offer better performance in areas with direct water contact. For example, TimberTech has a AZEK Marine Decking that is engineered to withstand constant moisture exposure, including saltwater immersion.
The comfort of your decking on your bare feet on a hot day is an important aspect to consider when selecting material for your next deck.
Considerations:
Trex is termite-proof, offering peace of mind in our termite-prone island paradise.
Trex requires minimal attention even during Hawaii's rainy months. Wood needs regular inspections and resealing.
While Trex decking is resistant to mold and mildew, it is not immune to it. Mold can grow on any surface that provides it with moisture and nutrients. This is especially true in areas with high humidity and warm temperatures, like Hawaii. For sealed wood, the susceptibility of mold varies depending on sealant quality and application. High-quality, well-maintained sealant can be comparable to Trex, while poor sealant or application can make it worse than uncapped Trex.

When compared to wood, there is typically a higher upfront cost, but long-term savings due to minimal maintenance. There are a few specialized tools needed for installation that may also increase the overall cost of installation.
Trex warranties range from 25 to 50 years, depending on product line and application. It is also transferable which add value to your property. However, the Trex warranty may exclude damages caused by direct contact with ocean water.
With the increase in lumber prices over the last few years, the option to go with wood may not be that drastic. Also, once you factor in the cost of labor and materials to paint, seal or stain the wood – this also adds to the overall cost. The cost can be influenced by the type of wood selected. Opting for pressure-treated pine can be a budget-friendly option. In Hawaii, ipe is often favored for decking despite its slightly higher cost. Additionally, we have expertise with sapele, teak, and various other hardwoods. It's essential to consider the ongoing maintenance expenses and potential replacements over time. When evaluating the total lifetime cost, wood decking may end up being comparable or slightly higher than Trex decking.
Wood is typically not warrantied by the manufacturer. However, the average lifespan is about 10-20 years, depending on the type of wood and maintenance practices. Certain hardwoods like ipe can last longer, but require more intensive care.

Wide variety of natural-looking colors and textures to complement your style. Trex comes in a variety of product lines and colors. Browse websites, brochures or obtain samples to help see colors and textures in person. You can also visit local dealers such as Honsador or visit home shows such as the BIA Big Home Show to view products on display. Check out our recent project, Waterfront Trex Installation in Kailua for inspiration.
Trex also has a variety of accessories that can complement your space and make design a breeze. Examples of Trex accessories includes railings, balusters, post caps, lighting, benches, and planters.
However, nothing speaks to beauty more than the natural look of wood. It could be a personal preference, but we love the natural grains of wood, chatoyancy and other characteristics of wood that cannot be duplicated.
Trex may also be susceptible to fading over time, especially in areas with a high amount of sun.
Offers a more natural look and feel, blending seamlessly with outdoor environments. And if you have an existing space with painted wood, you may choose to keep the consistency of your space by building your project with wood and color-matching the paint.
Nothing says high-end like a custom outdoor space with the look of natural wood. If plug-and-play isn’t your design preference, using wood or other materials to customize your space may be a better fit.

Trex has a smooth surface which may mean reduced risk of splinters. It may also provide more slip-resistance as it is specially designed to offer traction even when wet. This can keep keiki and kupuna safe when surfaces are wet such as after swimming in the ocean. Trex is also less likely to catch fire when compared to wood.
We have all had splinters and while they are minor, they are not fun for little kids. Wood is also slippery when wet – that means kids running around may fall and hurt themselves. Unless the wood is fire treated, it is easy to catch fire.

Trex materials require minimal upkeep compared to wood. Routine cleaning with soap and water is typically all that is needed to keep them looking their best. Unlike wood, Trex materials do not require staining, sealing, or painting, saving homeowners time and money in the long run.
Trex decking is engineered to withstand staining and fading, which proves advantageous when dealing with spills from food and drinks, especially in households with children or pets. This feature can significantly ease the burden of cleaning and maintenance.
However, it's worth noting that oil and grease may still leave marks on Trex decking. Additionally, harsh chemicals can potentially harm the material, so caution is necessary when using cleaning products.
Maintaining wood materials in Hawaii can be a labor-intensive task. Regular inspections, cleaning, and refinishing are essential to prolong their lifespan and maintain their appearance. Failure to adequately maintain wood materials can lead to costly repairs or replacement down the line.
Spills from food or drinks may be resisted if the wood is sealed. Like Trex, oil and grease require prompt action for clean-up. Also like trex, use caution when cleaning and be sure the proper tools and products are used to avoid damaging your wood.

Trex materials are crafted from a blend of recycled wood fibers and plastic (up to 95% of recycled materials), making them a sustainable choice for environmentally minded consumers. By repurposing materials that would otherwise end up in landfills, Trex helps reduce waste and minimize its carbon footprint.
Note that Trex is made in the USA and imported into Hawaii. Trex may have limited options for recycling at end-of-life disposal. It also has a high plastic content which may affect microplastic pollution.
The sustainability of wood materials depends on the source of the lumber. Opting for certified sustainable wood products can help mitigate the environmental impact of wood materials.
It is difficult to find sustainable woods in Hawaii due to our limited resources and delicate ecosystem. Importing wood from elsewhere can contribute to deforestation elsewhere. In Hawaii, it may be possible to source sustainable woods such as milo and monkeypod. Reuse Hawaii may also have options for your project, but also check for structural integrity before installation.
Wood naturally decomposes, minimizing landfill waste. Lifespan is less than Trex which means more replacement and increases resource consumption.
Considering the environmental impact of your decking choice? We can help you make an eco-conscious decision that aligns with your values. Reach out to us for information on sustainable decking options and their benefits for Hawaii's environment.
