How to Calculate the Square Footage of Your Hawaii Home or Space
Are you planning a renovation, considering an addition, or just curious about the size of your home? Knowing the square footage of your space is essential for many reasons, from assessing property value to planning interior layouts or budgeting for your next remodel. At Hilweh Builders, your trusted general contractor in Oahu, we’re here to guide you through the process. Whether you’re in Honolulu or on the Windward Side and beyond, this blog will help you understand how to calculate your home’s square footage accurately and efficiently.
FIND SQUARE FOOTAGE WITH HONOLULU PROPERTY RECORDS
Step 2: Click "Yes, I accept the above statement."
Step 3: Search for the property by address using the "Search by Location Address" option
Step 4: Review Property's Information
Example: A property is listed for sale at 7,324 square feet. So how would we check the square footage on the county records?
Search for the address and view the "Residential Improvement Information" and "Sketches".
Residential Improvement Information: The city has on record 7,324 of interior living space.
Sketches: If we add up 3,757 plus 3,567 the total is 7,324 square feet of interior space. Note that the total property also has 2,581 of exterior space.
Note: While these records provide a good estimate, they might not always be perfectly accurate. For precise measurements, consult with a professional.
Architectural Drawings
If you have access to your home’s blueprints or architectural plans, these documents typically include detailed measurements.
Use Technology or Phones
You can measure your home's square footage with your phone by using either a built-in measuring app like iPhone's Measure, or downloading special apps for measuring square footage. These apps utilize your phone's camera or LiDAR scanner to take measurements and calculate areas, although for bigger or intricate spaces, a traditional tape measure might be more accurate.
How to Measure Your Home’s Square Footage
Most Helpful for Remodels when Drawings Not Available
Measure Each Room
Measure the length and width of each room, including hallways and closets.
Multiply the length by the width to get the square footage of each room. For example, a room that is 12 feet by 10 feet is 120 square feet (12 x 10 = 120).
Measure Irregular Spaces
For rooms with alcoves or non-standard shapes, break the area into smaller rectangles or triangles, measure each section, and then sum up the areas.
For a triangular area, use the formula: 0.5 x base x height.
Sum Up All Areas
Add the square footage of all the individual rooms and spaces to get the total square footage of your home.
Include Non-Livable Spaces Wisely
Basements, garages, and attics may or may not be included depending on local real estate practices and how finished these spaces are. Check local guidelines or consult with a real estate professional.
Additional Tips for Accuracy
Double-Check Measurements: Measure each dimension at least twice to ensure accuracy.
Account for Wall Thickness: If you’re measuring from inside walls, remember that exterior wall thickness can affect total square footage.
Hire a Professional: For complex properties, consider hiring a professional appraiser or surveyor. Also, we take measurements when we plan for our customer's home remodel projects for accuracy.
