Remodeling Your Home for Aging in Place in Hawaii

In Hawaii, the idea of aging in place holds particular significance, especially for the kupuna who have lived in their homes for decades. It also holds true for families of multi-generational living where multiple family members live under the same roof or property and require different needs.

Over time, we've met many families and noticed a growing demand for remodeling homes to accommodate those who wish to age in place or need accessibility modifications. This led Hilweh Builders to become a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) with the NAHB. Now, we're uniquely qualified to assist families in need of home modifications for aging in place and accessibility remodeling.

Here are some of the common trends we have seen in Hawaii:

  • Husband and wife are taking care of one or both elderly parents and require an addition or ADU to modify home.

  • Grandma lives on one home on property and kids live in another home. The two properties are connected and require safe access modifications.

  • Multiple family members are living in one home and modifications are needed for a family member that has accessibility needs. A full home remodel is in place including bathrooms, kitchens, and more.

These examples offer a glimpse, but our encounters with homeowners in Oahu consistently reveal a prevalent concern for aging in place. Many families prefer to remain in their current homes rather than relocating to a new residence on the mainland or a care facility. This decision may stem from financial constraints, given the escalating property prices in Hawaii, as well as sentimental attachments to their homes, cherished memories, and family legacies. For those intent on aging in place, we offer valuable contractor advice to assist in planning their next remodeling project.

Bathroom Modifications for Aging-in-Place

Aging in place often takes precedence for many families, primarily due to its emphasis on functionality. Ensuring a safe and accessible environment becomes paramount, particularly concerning essential activities such as toileting, showering, and maintaining personal hygiene. Without adequate facilities in place, aging in place becomes challenging and potentially hazardous.

According to the National Institute on Aging, a significant proportion of injuries related to falls occur within the home environment. This underscores the critical importance of home modifications to mitigate such risks and enhance safety for aging individuals. By addressing key areas such as bathroom accessibility, fall prevention measures, and overall home layout, families can significantly improve the likelihood of successful aging in place while minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries.

Bathroom Remodeling Options:

  • Convert bathtubs to curbless showers with a built-in seat and a handheld showerhead.

  • Raise the height of the toilet seat with a toilet seat riser.

  • Consider installing low-profile sinks with lever handles for easier access.

Immediate & Low Cost Options:

  • Attach grab bars near toilets and on both the inside and outside of your tub and shower.

  • Place nonskid mats, strips, or carpet on all surfaces that may get wet.

  • Remember to leave a light on in the bathroom at night or use a night light that turns on automatically in the dark.

Contrasting Colors

For those aging in place or with accessibility needs, creating clear visual distinctions through contrasting colors is crucial. High-contrast environments can significantly reduce the risk of accidents by improving depth perception and making it easier to identify potential hazards. This is particularly important in areas like bathrooms, where slick surfaces and changes in elevation can be dangerous. Think contrasting paint colors for walls and floors, brightly colored grab bars that stand out against the shower wall, or even using contrasting colored mats to define different spaces in a room. Implementing these simple strategies can dramatically enhance functionality and safety within your home.

Kitchen Modifications for Aging-in-Place

Kitchen Remodeling Options:

  • Customize cabinets for easier access based on unique accessibility needs.

    • Roll-out shelves and drawers make it easier to bend and reach.

    • Built-in mixer lifts allow homeowners to still use their favorite appliances.

    • Or, cabinets with open spaces may accommodate wheelchairs.

  • Adjust height of countertops especially in homes where there is a wheelchair in place.

  • Create a workstation sink to reduce strain on the back and arms.

  • New appliances such an induction stovetop may reduce the risk of fire. Or, selecting an oven with controls on the front panel rather than the back.

Immediate & Low Cost Options:

  • Keep frequently used pots, pans, and kitchen utensils in a place where they are easy to reach.

  • Clean up spills immediately.

  • Prepare food while seated to prevent fatigue or loss of balance.

Ramp entrances like this one from Home Depot are a low cost option to accomodate wheelchair access.

General Home Modifications for Aging-in-Place

  • Entrance and Doors:

    • Ensure the main entrance has a clear path with no steps or tripping hazards.

    • Widen doorways throughout the house to at least 32 inches to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers.

    • Install easy-to-grip handles on all doors.

  • Flooring:

    • Install slip-resistant flooring throughout the house, especially in bathrooms and kitchens.

    • Avoid loose rugs and mats that can create tripping hazards.

    • Create seamless transitions within the home between bedrooms.

    • Consider easy-to-clean flooring like luxury vinyl plank (LVP).

  • Lighting:

    • Install brighter lighting throughout the house, especially in hallways and stairways.

    • Consider dimmer switches for added control and comfort.

  • Other Considerations:

    • Install ramps for any changes in elevation within the house.

    • Widen hallways to allow for easier maneuvering with wheelchairs or walkers.

    • Lower light switches and thermostats for easier reach.

    • Consider installing a stairlift for homes with multiple floors.

    • Smart locks can allow family members to come and go easily.

    • Change to composite decking for outdoor spaces.

Additions and ADUs

Knowing Hawaii's housing costs, creating a new, accessible living area might be more budget-friendly than extensive modifications. Here at Hilweh Builders, we specialize in building additions and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) designed specifically for aging in place or accessibility needs. Imagine a ground-floor ADU with wider doorways, a curbless shower, and grab bars throughout, all built to meet the highest safety standards. This allows seniors or those with limited mobility to maintain independence while remaining close to loved ones in the main house. We'll work with you to design a functional and beautiful space that prioritizes affordability and comfort.

Tailored Modifications for Every Home

Every aging-in-place remodel is unique, requiring personalized modifications to suit the specific needs and preferences of the homeowner. Hilweh Builders understands this and works closely with each client to create tailored solutions that enhance accessibility and comfort. Whether it's widening doorways, installing grab bars, or converting a tub to a shower, our team ensures that every detail is thoughtfully considered to support aging in place with grace and dignity.

The Investment in Your Future

Homes in Hawaii, particularly those designed for multi-generational living, tend to increase in value. So, making these home modifications typically creates more equity for families in the long run. With careful planning and design, the money you spend on renovating your Oahu home can be a wise investment. Consider the potential cost of assisted living facilities or nursing homes compared to the cost of renovations. In many cases, creating an accessible and comfortable home environment can be a more cost-effective solution in the long term, not only creating a better living situation for your loved ones but also potentially creating more wealth for the family.
